Andy Nice then came on stage to play beside
Natasha and supplied an unusual and very effective pizzicato
work on Hidden Treasure, a track from the
current album.
Also off
the album came Other Things, one of Natasha’s
few collaborative works, written with Alfredo Ricioppo,
also credited with the sleeve design. The lyric, like most
of her work, is uplifting and self affirming, but the delivery
here put me in mind of Nick Cave. Only three
songs into the set and the comparisons being made were of
the highest order.
Andy stepped off stage for the next track, the beautiful Naked
Flame, with its haunting line that “silence
will speak for truth”.
Her accompanist, though, was required again for the intricate
arrangements of the next song, crossed by not one, but two
winding instrumental bridges. Cure My Sentiment
was followed by Fate No Fall, that Natasha
told us is a story recounted to her by the victim of a hit
and run accident. The lyric vividly captures the out of body
moments of a near death experience.
Little
Voice, being my favourite song from her album, was
the highlight too of the gig for me. I have said many times
of Natasha Lea Jones that her work takes
me back to the halcyon days of The Incredible String
Band (in the Liquorice era) and
this song would have taken pride of place on any of their
best albums.
